Biography

Sarah Louisa Berry was born on 23 January 1855 ^[1] in Armidale, New South Wales to J. G. Berry. ^[2]

She married William Manuel in 1878. ^[3]

Together they became the parents of Emily Maud Manuel, Herbert George Manuel, Francis Garnet Samuel Manuel, Sarah Louise Manuel, Ernest Norman Manuel, Charles John Manuel, Eveline May Manuel, Selby Masterman Manuel, Henry Harold Manuel, Thomas Allen Manuel, and Marion (Manuel) Marcus.

Sarah passed away on and was buried at Emmaville Cemetery in Emmaville. ^[4]

OBITUARY

MRS. WILLIAM MANUEL.

Another of the worthy old pioneers in the person of Mrs. William Manuel, passed away on Thursday last, at her home, "Park Avenue", Emmaville. Mrs. Manuel was born at Armidale 81 years ago, and was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Berry. Fifty-nine years' ago she married Mr. William Manuel, who at that time owned a property on Sailsbury Plains, near Uralla. Selling their property there, they went on the land again in the Walcha district for about 20 years, and finally the old couple, upon retiring, came to live in Emmaville, where two sons are on the land. Her husband died nine years ago. Mrs. Manuel could tell of many, very interesting happenings and hardships of the pioneering days. Of the marriage seven sons and three daughters survive, viz-, Messrs. F. W. (Coonamble), G. S. (Emmaville), H. H. and C. J. (Inverell), H. S. (Coffs Harbor), S. M. (Emmaville) and T. A. Manuel (Binnaway), Mrs. Marcus (Blandford), Mrs. Haworth (Weabonga), and Miss E. Manuel (Emmaville). The late Mrs. Manuel appeared to be quite well and did not complain during the morning, but about 1 p.m. she collapsed suddenly. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, the Rev. H. J. Mills reciting prayers at the home and officiating at the graveside. Funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Schumacher (Emmaville) and Lightfoot (Glen Innes).
