English food writer, chef, baker, and television presenter
Mary Rosa Alleyne Berry was born in 1935. She is the daughter of Alleyne William Stewart Berry and Margaret Conway (Wilson) Berry. She studied at Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in France.
She has written many cookbooks including the Baking Bible in 2009. She has hosted several television series. She is perhaps best known as a judge on The Great British Bake Off from its launch in 2010 until 2016.
She was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2012 for services to culinary arts and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2021 for services to broadcasting, the culinary arts, and charity. She was featured on the UK Who Do You Think you Are? [1] [2] Tragically in 1989, her son William John M. Hunnings died in an auto accident.
