Biography

Justus Bergman was the father of actress Ingrid Bergman.

Justus Samuel was born in Slätthög parish 2 May 1871 to organist and school teacher Johan Peter Bergman and his wife Britta Sophia Samuelsdotter.^[1]

He was the 13th of the 14 children of Johan Bergman, a music teacher in Kronoberg in southern Sweden. ^[2]

Justus Samuel Bergman moved to Klara parish in Stockholm in October 1890.^[3]

From 1890 to 1893 Justus Samuel Bergman lived in the household of grocer Elis Bernhard Reinius in Stockholm Klara. He was registered as a shop assistant. In January 1893 Bergman went to America.^[4] Justus Bergman arrived at Ellis Island on board the Aurania 20 March 1893.^[5]

At the time of the US census 1900 "Eustes" Bergman lived in the household of his sister Jennie, who was married to the brick mason Owen McIntee in Chicago. He worked as a candy maker.^[6] The spelling Eustes is actually a pretty good depiction of the Swedish pronunciation of Justus.

In America Justus Bergman studied painting and photography, mainly with an orientation towards portraiture.^[7] Justus Samuel Bergman came back from America in March 1906, living on his own in Jakob parish in Stockholm.^[8] He started his own business, but also continued his studies.^[7]

Justus Bergman met 16-year-old Frieda ("Friedel") Adler of Kiel, Germany, in a Stockholm park in 1900, and married her seven years later in 1907 after a long effort to obtain her parents' consent to the marriage. ^[9] According to the moving-in book for Jakob parish they were wed in a civil ceremony in Hamburg 13 June 1907.^{[10] [11]}

At least two children died in infancy before their daughter Ingrid was born in 1915.^[12] Justus Samuel Bergman lived at Strandvägen in Hedvig Eleonora parish, from 1914 to 1924. During this time daughter Ingrid was born (1915), his wife died (1918) and his sister Ellen Sigrid Bergman) came to stay (1920).^[13]

Friedel Adler died when her daughter was very young.

Justus Samuel Bergman died from stomach cancer on July 29, 1929, at the age of 58.^[14][15]

Research notes

From the household records for the Bergman family it rather looks like Justus Samuel was the 12th of 14. The sequence is a bit messy, but there are clearly two siblings younger than him.^[16][17]

The meeting with his future wife in a Stockholm park in 1900 does not agree very well with the primary sources - although a visit back home may have escaped the records. According to Swedish Wikipedia they met in Germany.
