John Berglund was born the 27th of February, 1860, in Sjennarum, Jonkoping County, Sweden. John's name was changed after he arrived in the United States. In Sweden John's surname was Bjorklund.
John came to America, and settled first in Rice County, Minnesota in 1883.
John filed on the 27th of March, 1886, application No. 9843 in the land office in North Platte, Nebraska for the purpose of obtaining a homestead. John obtained 147.88/100 acres of land legally described as "the East 1/2 of the North West 1/4 and Lots 1 & 2 of Section 18, in Township 16 of Range 41". John paid $17.45 for the land.[1]
John married Augusta Christina Carlson on the 7th of October, 1886 in Ogallala, Keith county, Nebraska.
John stated in sworn court testimony in Deuel County, Nebraska in 1886 that a mistake had been made on his Naturalization Certificate, and that his name had been written as John August or Augustus Berglund but that he only used the name John A. Berglund, and he only signed his name John A. Berglund.
John became a naturalized American citizen on the 1st of November, 1892, in Deuel county, Nebraska.[2]

John and Augusta were the parents of three sets of twins:
John and Augusta's infant son Allen, twin brother of Alice Berglund, died on the 24th of July, 1904. Notice of Allen's death appeared as follows: "Mr. and Mrs. Jno Berglund suffered a sad bereavement in the sudden death last Saturday, of their infant son. The little one was tenderly laid away amid a wealth of lowers and attended by a large concourse of sympathizing friends and neighbors on Sunday last. Rev. Kerr conducted the funeral services."[4]
John obtained additional land in Deuel county, Nebraska by paying the back taxes on land that had been abandoned. The following notice of John's petition for foreclosure on the land appeared as follows: "Notice to Non-Resident - To David J. Blackwell, Mrs. David J. Blackwell and all persons interested in the premises hereinafter described, non-resident defendants, are hereby notified that on the 5th day of September, 1904, John Berglund plaintiff, filed his petition in the District Court of Deuel County, Nebraska, praying for the foreclosure of a tax sale certificate issued by the county Treasurer of said county to him on the 15th day of April, 1899, for the delinquent taxes, interest and penalties for the years 1893 to 1897 both inclusive duly assessed and levied upon the South-west quarter of the North-west quarter of Section Thirteen, in Township sixteen, North of Range forty-two, West of the sixth principal Meridian in Nebraska, and upon which he has paid the subsequent taxes for the years 1898, 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, and 1903. You and each of you will answer said petition on or before the 31st day of October, 1904, or the prayer of said petition will be granted. John Berglund By G.C. McAllister, his Atty."[5]
John died the 19th of July, 1906 at his home on Plum Creek, Garden county, Nebraska. John was buried in the Plum Creek cemetery, Garden county, Nebraska.[6]
John's obituary appeared in the Chappell Register on the 26th July, 1906 as follows: "John August Berglund was born in Sjennarum, Sweden, Feb. 27, 1860; was left an orphan at 9 years of age; came to America in 1882, first settling in Minnesota, moving to Deuel county, Neb., in 1886. Was married to Christina Bjorklund at Ogallala Oct. 6, 1886. To this union was born 10 children, a boy, at the age of two years died on July 22, 1904. He joined the M.E. church, of which he was a consistent member. Honest and upright in his dealings with his fellow man, he was respected by all. A kind husband and indulgent parent went to his reward July 19, 1906. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, brother, nine children - 5 girls and 4 boys - and a host of friends. A Neighbor."[7]
