Biography

Thomas (Tom) Berglund December 24, 1935 - April 24, 2014 F. Thomas (Tom) Berglund, 78, died from a sudden heart attack on April 24, 2014, in Modesto, CA. Tom was born on December 24, 1935 in San Diego, CA. After graduating from Helix High School, where he met his wife Carol, he worked several odd jobs before becoming the Manager of the House of Fabrics in La Mesa, CA. in 1961. Tom was also in the Naval Reserves from 1958-1961. In 1963, he was transferred to manage the House of Fabrics in downtown Modesto. Tom was a "politician" of sorts and liked to be involved in city government and volunteering in the community. He was actively involved with the Bel Passi Baseball Park, and coached many teams. Tom also served as a member of the City of Modesto Planning Commission on more than one occasion. In 1967, Tom was hired as the Executive Director of the Downtown Improvement District, where he worked tirelessly to enrich the downtown community. He was a member of the Sylvan Union School Board from July 1973 to July 1977, serving a term as President of the Board from 1975-1976. In 1978, Tom was named the Executive Director of the United Way of Stanislaus County. He worked in the Modesto office until he was promoted to the Director of Operations and Administration for the United Way of the Bay Area in San Francisco. He eventually retired in 1993. Tom was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Gladys Berglund. He is survived by his ex-wife Carol Berglund, sister Beverly Harp, brothers Dennis Berglund and Bob Berglund; daughters Susan Berglund-Weaver, Terri Partridge and Shari Plemons; and sons Michael Berglund and Eric Berglund. Tom also has 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
