Biography

Harriet (Berg) Schwartz has Jewish Roots.

Harriet was born February 5, 1926 in Manhattan, New York City, New York. She was the daughter of Lewis Berg and Tillie Edelstein (aka Gertrude Berg).[1][2][3][4]

On March 15, 1953, she married Dr. Aaron David Schwartz, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Frank J. Schwartz of Spring Valley at that time.[5]

Harriet died at the age of 77 on March 30, 2003 in Pomona, Rockland county New York.

"SCHWARTZ, HARRIET BERG - Harriet Berg Schwartz, 77, of West Nyack, died March 30, 2003 at Summit Park Hospital in Pomona, NY. Mrs. Schwartz was a Rockland County resident for 50 years.
Born February 5, 1926 in New York City, Mrs. Schwartz was the daughter of Gertrude Berg, a pioneer of radio and television and creator and star of the "The Goldbergs," and Louis Berg, an engineer.
Mrs. Schwartz graduated from the Fieldtson School in 1944 and received a B.A. from Barnard College in 1948. She was a researcher for the United Nations World Magazine and the Tex & Jinks Show, one of the first television talk shows. Mrs. Schwartz received a Ph.D. in 17th century literature from Columbia University in 1972 and taught at Hunter College and the Rockland Country Day School.
Mrs. Schwartz also was a published short story and children's book author. She is the author of Backstage with Clawdio (Knopf Books for Young Readers, 1993) and When Artie Was Little (Knopf Books for Young Readers, 1996). Her short stories were published in several literary magazines and won the Louise E. Reynolds Memorial Award for Fiction in 1999 and the Irish Farmer's Journal National Award in 1995.
Mrs. Schwartz is survived by her husband of 50 years, Dr. A. David Schwartz, who maintained a surgical practice in Rockland County, four children, Joshua Schwartz of Kent, NY, Anne Schwartz of Brooklyn, NY, Henry Schwartz of New York, NY, and Frank Schwartz of Seal Harbor, Maine, and four grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.[6]
