Biography

John Bentley immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

John Bentley is believed to have been born in England in 1618 and came to America aboard the Truelove in 1635 most likely with his father William and sister Alice. He died in Charlestown, (Washington County) Rhode Island on November 20, 1690. He is "known to he had a son at that time named Richard, who had a wife, Margaret and other children including, "very possible a son John who was born in about 1674 and married a girl from New Jersey..[1] [2]

Research Notes

This profile use to list William Bentley of Massachusetts as father of John. However, the records of Milton Church from 1691, show Rev. Peter Thacher of Milton baptized on:

April 12, 1691. William, Mary and Hannah Bentlet, Grandchildren to Bro. R. Haughton. (see: The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volume 22, 1868. Page 443 [[https://books.google.com/books?id=eyocy7cBriYC&pg=PA443#v=onepage&q&f=false available online here

John was not listed among the children baptized. There is no record of this William having a son named John.

William Jr. (son of William of Rhode Island) will lists a John as his oldest son in his will written on August 18, 1748. William Jr. was born around 1680 and his other listed children were born in early 1700s.

Other genealogist believe this John is the son of the William of the Truelove, who traveled with a John, who some researchers believe died in 1690 but in Rhode Island. The GEDcom data listed 1690 in Mass. see Allan Bentley's profile for a John
