Wesley was born in 1838 in Canton, Stark County, Ohio,to parents John Marbrook and Mary (Hobbs) Benskin.[1]
Marriage
Wesley married Jane Millington on 28 January 1858 in Richland, Illinois.[2]

Wesley and Jane had the following children:
i. Lida Florence (Benskin) Hitchler, b. 19 Dec 1858 in Richland County, Ill., d. 8 Jan 1939 in Metz, Jasper, Iowa, m. George William Hitchler, 19 Sep 1882.[3][4]
ii. John W. Benskin, b. abt. 1860 in Claremont Township, Richland, Illinois.[3][5]
iii. Joseph F. Benskin, b. abt. 1862 in Illinois.[5]

v. Jerusha J. Benskin, b. abt. 1867 in Illinois.[5]
ix. Wesley B. Benskin, b. abt. 1880 in Illinois.[5]
Civil War Service
Wesley joined the Union Army on 9 September 1862 when he enlisted into Company H, Illinois 130th Infantry Regiment at Camp Butler, Illinois.[6][7]
The 130th participated in the following battles and campaigns:[7]
Battle of Magnolia Hills, Port Gibson, 1 May 1863.
Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi from 18 May to 4 July 1863.
Assaults on Vicksburg 19 May 19 and 22 May.
Siege of Jackson July 10-17.
Reconnaissance to Pearl River July 11.
Western Louisiana Campaign October 3 - November 30 1863.
Reconnaissance on Matagorda Peninsula (Texas) January 21 1864.
Red River Campaign March 10 - May 22.
Battle of Sabine Cross Roads April 8 1864.
Most of the Regiment including Wesley were captured at the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads on 8 April 1864.[8] The men were confined at Tyler, Texas for 13 months.[9] He was paroled at Red River, Louisiana on 27 May 1865 and retroactively discharged from the Army on 12 May 1865.[8]
Wesley received a veteran's pension before his death and after he died, his wife Jane was paid a veteran's widow pension.[10][11]
