From History of St Louis, Louis A. Benoist was born in St Louis 12 Aug 1803. His father Francois M. Benoist, was a native of Montreal, Can, and his mother was the daughter of Charles Sanguinette, an early settler. Francois M. Benoist was an Indian-trader, and removed to St. Louis in 1790. His son Louis A. Attended early in life the school of Judge Tompkins, and at the age of fourteen went to St. Thomas' College, Kentucky, where he remained for two yers. Returning to St. Louis, he commenced reading medicine with Dr. Todson. After a trial of two yers he relinquished medicine and began the study of law in the office of Horatio Cozens. Soon after this he entered the office of Pierre Benoist & Co. John J. Anderson & Co, Darby & Barsdale and Boatmen's Savings Institution.
