Biography

Edwin Henry Bennett was born and christened Sturminster Newton, Dorset 1863. ^[1]

He was the son of Edwin Bennett & Caroline [Greenstock]. ^[2]

Aged 7 in 1871 he resided Sturminster Newton, Dorset, with his parents and four sisters. ^[3]

Aged 17 in 1881 he was a horse groom for the Coleman family in St Marylebone, London. ^[4]

In 1884 he had an affair with Annie Halford of Worcestershire, resulting in an illegitimate son, Thomas William Halford born Chaceley 1885.

Around 1885 he had another illegitimate daughter in Lancashire.

In 1890 and 1891, he was registered on the electoral register in Saint Pancras, London. ^[5][6]

He married Elizabeth Alexander, Witney, Oxfordshire 1893. ^[7]

He met Elizabeth via his sister Sarah Bennett, because they were both maids at the same house.

In 1897 he had an affair with Kate Portman of Warwickshire, resulting in an illegitimate son, Albert Edward Portman born Alcester 1898.

Aged 37 in 1901 he was a "coachman (domestic)", residing Kiddington, Oxfordshire, with his wife and three children. ^[8]

Aged 47 in 1911 he was a "coachman domestic" residing Tenbury, Worcestershire, with his wife and three children. ^[9]

Edwin was blinded by a horse kicking him in the face. He went to live with his son Alex Bennett and granddaughter Doris Bennett at 7 Elm Tree Road, Lymm, Cheshire. They fell out with Alex's brother Ted Bennett because he failed to assist with the financial burden. ^[10]

Edwin died aged 78, Cheshire 20 January 1942. ^[11]

Research Notes

I can't find him on the 1891 census.

His father was illegitimate, and his son Edwin Jr also had at least three illegitimate children with different women around the country.
