According to the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani[1] (Translated from the Italian):
VICTOR III, Pope, blessed. - Dauferio was born in 1027 from a branch of the princely family of Benevento. The Chronicle of Montecassino informs us that his father, Landolfo V del Zotto, prince of Benevento, was killed by the Normans; of the mother there is no news, while from the Dialogi, written later by Dauferio himself, it is known that one of his paternal great-grandmothers, Bella, was a nun at S. Pietro in Benevento.
He changed his name to Desiderio when he became a monk at the Abbey of S. Sophia.[2][1]
He was elected pope on 24 May 1086 and crowned nearly a year later on 9 May 1087 taking the name Victor III.[2]
