René Bénard was born about 1680 (53 years old at death in June 1733), possibly in Sorel, Canada, Nouvelle-France. [1]
Listed in 1681 Census:
- "Mathurin Besnard 37 - Marguerite Bourbier (Viart), sa femme, 31
- enfants ; Jeanne, 7 - Marguerite, 3 - Mathurin/René, 1
- 1 fusil ; 2 pistolets ; 3 bêtes à cornes ; 10 arpents en valeur. [2]
- Mathurin Bernard au tableau serait René Benard, dont on ne retrouve pas l'acte de baptême, mais qui se marie à 28 ans [?] le 28 juillet 1710 à Montréal. Mathurin-René pourrait être la même personne portant ce double prénom. [3]

- Note: Very capable at many trades. He started out as a furniture maker and floor plank maker. He formed a partnership with Gerard Barsalau, a master tanner and Rene became a master miller. During these years, he worked at Villemarie, he buit a grinding mill at Ste. Anne de Bout de I'lle. At the same time, life was very difficult for his wife. She had many pregnancies and most of her babies did not survive infancy. Of her 16 children, only 5 survived to adulthood.
