Biography

Louis Bellard, son of Louis Bellard and Marie Janis, was born February 4, 1813. His birth and baptism were registered at the Opelousas Church in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. [1]

It seems likely that he was the Louis Bellard who married Celise Carriere at the Opelousas Courthouse on 14 May 1857. [2] [3]

The couple had at least nine children, starting about twenty years before their marriage:

His wife Celise died sometime before 29 March 1859 when her succession was filed. [14]

Louis married Marie Louise Thibodeaux, the widow of Urbain Lavergne, on 3 Aug 1858 in Opelousas. [15]

Note: a P Matte was a witness at their wedding. There are a lot of entires in SW Louisiana records showing a relationship between these two families.

Here are some of my notes on the Louis Bellard and Marie Janis line. Louis Bellard md. Marie Eloise Thibodeaux widow of Urbain Lavergne after Celise Carriere died. I have outlined the relationships in the census records below. This shows where the children of Louis and Celise were in the 1860 census record. This is strong evidence Marie Melanie Bellard b. 1815 and Louis Bellard b, 1813 were siblings and that Marie Janis born 1786 was their mother. The census records are often way off on ages. Marie Janis had two relationships that she had children with. Pierre Matte, Louis Bellard, and she md. Etienne Silvain Bienvenu Gauthier (no children with the last man).

Hi Lesa, I agree something doesn't look right. Thanks for letting me know. I couldn't find another record. Looks like they hadn't gotten around to marrying or there was a problem with the courthouse record. Those are the only records I found for them on the Hebert CD. What date do you have and what is the source?

Two sons, Louis and Pierre Bellard, have the wrong mother on their SWLR marriage records-- both records say their mother was Celise Thibodeaux instead of Celise Carriere. (Those two sons' profiles were created by a Perry gedcom import that listed them with the Bellard surname, but with Celise Thibodeaux and her husband, Louis Boulet, as their parents.) I disconnected Pierre from those Boulet/Thibodeaux parents and connected him here. There is another profile for Louis, so they will have to be merged.
