At the beginning of the War, he first served with Captain Ralston's 6th Class, 6th Company, in the 4th Battalion as a private. It was Jacob Beissel who served with the Associators and Militia of the County of Northampton in the year 1776. A general muster roll of the 4th Battalion of Northampton County Militia was held on May 14, 1778 with Colonel John Sigfried commanding and Lt. Col. Nicholas Kern and Major James Boyd in service on June 23, 1783. Jacob Beissel was listed as a Lieutenant under Major John Trexler at the close of the War. Jacob's older brother John (Hans) Peter Beissel, Jr. (1754-1829) and their father Hans Peter Beissel, Sr. (1725 in Europe 1783) also served as private 3rd Class and Private 2nd Class respectively in Captain John Ralston's 6th Company, 4th Battalion, Northumberland Co. Militia. Jacob Beissel married Gertrude Wagner in 1780 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Macungie, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Macungie is approx. 8 miles southwest of Allentown. About 1789, he moved to Oxford Township in Chester County, Pa approx. 63 miles southwest of Allentown. His daughter Salome was born here on 9-21-1789. He later moved to Leck Kill, Pa which is approx. 75 miles northwest of Oxford, Pa. In 1853 the St. John's Church, Lutheran and Reformed was organized. Among the early members were the following three sons of Jacob Beissel: Peter Beissel (1801-1873), Jacob Beissel and Daniel H. Beissel, Sr. (1782-1860). There is no mention of Jacob's other two sons, Johannes John (1791-1851) and Samuel H. Beissel (1803-1872). Also none of the following five sons-in-law of Jacob Beissel are listed as taxables of Mahoney Township in 1778: Ludwig Byerly, Jacob Brosius, George Hepler, Daniel Swartz and Daniel Snyder. Jacob Beissel's Last Will and Testament was completed 3-26-1828. Besides all 5 sons and all 5 daughters that were mentioned in Jacob's will, he included his wife Gertrude (Wagner). His Will in part read as follows: "One stove and pipe, one cow fit and pastured summer and winter..." The witnesses for this Will were Jacob Smith and Jacob Wagoner. Jacob Beissel's tombstone reads as follows: "Here rests Johannes Jacob Beissel, born on the 8th day of January 1758 and died on the 12th of September 1829 aged 71 years, 8 months, and 4 days."
