Biography

According to his Oath of Intention to become a citizen of the United States, found in Superior Court records in Elbert County, Georgia, Thomas came to the United States in November 1821; renouncing his citizenship of Great Britain and Ireland. The 21 Sep 1825, he made a declaration to become a citizen. Mar 1827, he bought land for his son, Samuel S. Beggs in Elbert County. Recorded 22 Feb 1837. 13 Mar 1828. Thomas was appointed First Lieutenant of the 299th Militia by Governor John Forsythe. 1832. Thomas Beggs and sons, James and William Hugh are listed as persons entitled to draws in the Elbert County land lottery in Captain Stowers militia districe. 13 Jun 1843. he was granted 16o acres of land, formerly Cherokee Indian lands by Governor Charles McDonald. Evidently, Thomas had a good business head. Per the real and personal estate records in 1840, he owned 850 acres valued at $5,250, sixteen slaves valued at $12,250, and had $1,230 worth of personal property.
