Adam was born in 1842 in Germany under the name Johann Adam Bächle. Adam immigrated to the United States in 1851, on the ship South Carolina with his parents Jakob Bächle and Anna Maria and they changed their last name to Beckley. He was a Cooper by trade. Adam enlisted in Company G of the 103rd OVI on 28 Jul 1862. He mustered out with the company on 12 Jun 1865. Adam married Maria Hegerling on 20 Jul 1865 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He passed away in 1909.
