Jacob Peter Beckley, born August 4, 1867, in Hannibal, Missouri. A biography with JACOB "JAKE" BECKLEY'S Findagrave page shows parents Bernhard and Rosine Beckley. Also noted was Jake was married twice; to Mary Murphy, who died in 1891, and to Georganna Rupp, who passed away after Jake, in 1930.
Jacob "Jake" Beckley would become a professional baseball player in 1888, playing for Pittsburgh, and would end up playing 20 years by the time his career was over. "Jake" or "Eagle Eye", would end up being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971.
Exclusively a first baseman, Jake had a combination of speed and power. In the early days of baseball, home runs not being common, triples were an indication of a batter's power. Jake led the league in triples twice, and had 244 at career's end. Coincidentally, the 1900 census of Cincinnati would show Jake, wife Georganna, and 6 fellow teammates of Jake's rooming in a hotel on 5th Street. One of his teammates shown was Sam Crawford, who would also get to the Hall of Fame, but in 1957. Sam had 312 triples when he retired, best all time.
Jake Beckley played 9 years for Pittsburgh, 1 for New York, 6 with Cincinnati, and finished out with 4 years in St. Louis. The 1910 census showed he and wife Georganna in Kansas City, Mo., with Jake's occupation listed as baseball player.
