John is mentioned as fighting with US Infantry in the Phillipines in his father's obituary in 1916. [1] He joined the 24th Infantry in 1912. He was honorably discharged in 1915, but may have re-enlisted.[2] The 24th Infantry Regiment of the US Army was primarily made up of African-American soldiers prior to 1951.[3]
He is also mentioned in his brother A. Lee's obituary in 1936 as being a survivor. [4]
