Biography

Elizabeth was born on 19 November 1665 in Rottingdean, Sussex, England. Rottingdean lies just east of Brighton on the south coast. In the 17th century, it was a thriving village in which many residents became Quakers. Most prominent amongst these was Elizabeth's father, Nicholas Beard, who was one of the richest landowners in the area. His wife, Elizabeth's mother, was called Susanna. Susanna's maiden name is currently unknown. Nicholas and Susanna heard George Fox speak at Steyning in 1655 and immediately converted to the Quaker faith.

Elizabeth was one of at least 18 siblings. The eldest, Richard (?) was born in 1649 and the youngest, Daniel in 1672.

Elizabeth married Edward Barber, a yeoman farmer, on 09 November 1697 in the Quaker Meeting House at Blatchington, Sussex. The marriage record states her place of residence as Ovingdean, an immediately adjacent village to Rottingdean. Elizabeth and Edward had four children: Mary (born 1698), Nathaniel (born 1701), Sarah (born 1703) and Hannah Barber. The elder siblings's births were in Steyning but Hannah was born further west in Tortington near Arundel.

Elizabeth's husband Edward died on the first of April 1707 in Tortington. A year later, she married Thomas Steele, a carpenter from Chichester. The marriage took place on 15 November 1708 at the Quaker Meeting House in Arundel. They had no children.

Elizabeth passed away on 07 January 1729/30 and was buried in Arundel.
