Biography

William "was born on the old homestead farm of the family near Lexington, KY" in 1835.^[1][2][3][4] His parents were Joseph M. and Sarah (Foree) Beard.^[1][3]

Marriage and Family

In 1860, Dr. Beard married Matilda Roberts^[5] and they had six children together, Dr. Frank M. Beard, Dr. S. Lowry, Elliott B., Charles P., Pryor R., and Miss Iva Beard.^[1][2][4][6]

Military

During the Civil War Dr. Beard enlisted with the Confederacy and joined with "the Forty-first Alabama infantry, in the Army of Tennessee, and he was commissioned a surgeon of that regiment."^[1][2] Near the end of the war William was "transferred to Virginia in the command of Gen. Robert E. Lee." Late in the year of 1863, William "was made senior surgeon of his brigade". William was still with Gen. Lee at the time of the general's surrender at Appomattox "and there received his parole".^[1][2] Upon receiving his parole Dr. Beard returned to Shelby County and resumed his practice of medicine.^[1]

Death

William passed away early in the morning on Jan. 9 in 1913 at his home in Shelbyville, KY.^[1][2][3] Burial was at Grove Hill Cemetery with "Masonic honors".^[1][3]
