Biography

Samuel E. Bear and was born in 3 Apr 1812 (book shows 12 Mar 1812) in Newville, Cumberland, Pennsylvania, son of Ephraim Bear (1784–1865) and Mary Bowers (1784–1861).. He passed away in 20 Feb 1880 (Bear Family book shows 20 Feb 1880 but gravestone shows 25 Feb 1880). Samuel would live and rear his large family in Bearsdale, Macon, Illinois, which was named after him (his 3rd wife named the town).

There are several variations of the name Bear and the origins appear to be from the German form, Bär, which is equal to Baer but the English spelling, Bear is commonly adhered to.

As a young boy, he learned the craft of being a cabinet maker and constructed his own furniture in Pennslyvania.

In 1847, he made his way to Pike County, Illinois (his wife's brother lived in the County) but settled in Macon County, Illinois. In 1852, his brother's Jacob & Ephraim made their way to Macon County, Illinois but Samuel had since returned to Pennsylvania, starting up a hardware business. Samuel lost his 1st wife in 1851 and in 1859, he lost his 2nd wife. After his 2nd loss, he decided to move back to Illinois and join his brothers in the Spring of 1860. Samuel moved his small family of 3 sons and 1 daughter to Decatur, Illinois and settled in Harristown Township for 3 years. In 1863 after returning to Pennsylvania, he had married his 3rd wife and they would now reside in Hickory Point Township, Illinois. Bearsdale is named after Samuel E. Bear, in May 1892 and he is the owner of the SE quarter of section 30, Hickory Point Township. His wife, affectionatley known as "Aunt Ann" named the township. Samuel E. Bear.

Samuel was of the Lutheran faith and was active up until 4 years before his death when he was stricken with paralysis. His dying statement was, "I am just waiting until the time comes as a person at a railroad station; when the train comes, I go."

Samuel was married 3 times, 1st to Rebecca Myers (daughter of Jacob & Lydia Myers), they had 4 children; 2nd to Magdaline Ruby Swayer, m. 21 Jan 1853 (daughter of Jacob & Julia Ann (Ruby) Swayer, they had 2 children; and 3rd to Ann Catherine Christlieub (daughter of Jacob & Julia (Morris) Christlieub), who he married on 18 Feb 1863, near Newville, Pennsylvania, they had 4 children.[1]

Research Notes

The biographical history is taken from the "A genealogy of the Bear family and biographical record of the descendants of Jacob Bear, 1747-1906 (1906)." Samuel is mentioned throughout the book but I've taken portions from pages 32-35. I have access to the pdf (online/pdf form through Forgotten Books subscription) but I'm unable to upload to WikiTrees without permission.
