Biography

Early Life

Daniel was born on 12 November 1805 in Gt Yarmouth, and baptised on 15 November 1805 He is the youngest son of Philip Bales and Rachel Thompson.

Family

He married Ann Howes on 31 July 1825 in Gorleston, Gt Yarmouth, when both were 19. Daniel signed the register; Ann made her mark. The witnesses were John Seagoe and Margaret Taylor. They had five children: Daniel, b 1827, Rachael Charlotte b 1828, Phillip Robert, 1835-1895, William b 1835, and Thomas 1838-1901

In the 1841 census, they are all living in Chapel Square; Daniel is described as a carter. There are a couple of references in the Norwich Gazette around this time about a carter called Daniel Beales being fined for driving his cart ‘furiously’, which may be him. In the electoral registers for 1852,3,5 and 8 he’s listed as having ‘house and stables’ at Mill Rd, and in 1859 at Victoria Rd. In the 1861 census, they are now at 2 Victoria Rd, and Daniel is described as a ‘cow keeper’ and this is confirmed on Ann’s death certificate – maybe they had a small dairy?? In 1871, Daniel is no longer living with Ann; he‘s a lodger at Redan Opening, and described as a Fish carter. Ann doesn’t appear in the 1871 census.

Death & Legacy

On 9 April 1882, Daniel was found drowned in the River Yare: there was an inquest on 11 April, which returned an open verdict, and he was buried on 12 April in the parish church, his address at time of death being given as ‘row 140’. From the newspaper report, he was living with his wife in row 140; on the Sunday morning someone saw him in the sea under the Wellington Pier and pulled him out: he said he’d fallen in the water. A few hours later he was found in the river by the fish wharf. He was buried on 12 April 1882.
