Robert Beale was 17 when he enlisted as an ensign in the 5th Virginia Regiment during the American Revolution. He saw action at the battles of Trenton, Princeton, and Brandywine. He was captured by the British when Charleston, South Carolina, was surrendered. By the end of the Revolution, he had become a captain. He returned to Virginia and eventually settled down in Westmoreland County where he farmed. Beale eventually rose to the rank of major in the Virginia militia.
Robert is buried at Beale Family Cemetery at Chestnut Hill in Ethel, Richmond County, Virginia.
