Lionel Bayly died as a prisoner of war on the Montevideo Maru during the Second World War.

Lionel Joseph Bayly was born on 31 May 1907 in Singapore, Straits Settlement, the son of Cecil Gustavus and Maty Elizabeth Bayly.

He enlisted in the Australian Army for overseas service at Caulfield, VIC on 10 June 1940 as a Private (VX23614). At the time he was single, a cleaner/labourer and was living at Richmond, VIC with his sister, Mrs Norah Johnston whom he named as next of kin. It is apparent he had brothers, Cecil[1] and Mervyn.[2] He had fair hair and grey eyes.

He was posted to 2/22nd Bn on 15 Jul 1940.

He entrained from Victoria for Sydney on 11 April 1941, embarking there on HMAT "Katoomba" on 12 April 1941 for Rabaul, New Britain in the Territory of New Guinea and disembarking there on 26 April 1941. His Battalion was to form the core of "Lark Force" for the defence of the Territory.

After the Japanese invasion of 23 January 1942, he was captured at Kokopo Hospital and became a Prisoner of War, initially held at Rabaul. Japanese records have him as a part of Headquarters.
