Samuel H. Baty (Beaty) was born on 24 July, most likely in the year 1830 in the state of Ohio. He was married twice (first widowed and then remarried) and had a total of 14 children. He lived most of his adult life in Iowa and died there on the 4th of Mar 1912 (aged 81–82). His obituary says that he died of "old age."[1] He was buried in the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton, Jasper County, Iowa.[2]
Early Life
It is believed that Samuel was an orphan and many mysteries about his parents remain unanswered nearly 90 years after his death. It is known through family legend (handed down in several lines) that his parents died when he was young.[3]
Through DNA testing, it has been learned that Samuel descends from the "larger Baty/Beaty/Beatty family" that originates from the border region between Scotland and England.[4] From his gravestone and the written records we have possible places of birth include Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and from family legend, Ireland or Scotland (see section: Birth Location in this profile). The closest known DNA relative, Myron Beatty, traces his earliest records to Ohio. Other family legends include stories that Samuel, after becoming orphaned, migrated to America from Ireland or Scotland. One story even casts him as a stowaway on a ship from Scotland, traveling alone as a boy.[5] The DNA record proves that Samuel's father and grandfather carried the surname Baty (or Beaty, or Beatty); finding a connection to his family will probably only come through a DNA discovery of a relative.
Other than the aforementioned orphan stories, not much is known about Samuel's childhood or family origins. He first appears (in official government records) in the 1856 Iowa state census[6] in Lake Prairie, Marion County, Iowa, at the age of 26, working on the farm of William S. George and Susannah (Wilson) George. William and Susannah would later become his in-laws when, two years later, he would marry their daughter Rebecca.

Occupation
Samuel was a farmer.[6][8][10][14][24] Later, in his retired years, his occupation is listed as "own income"* on the 1910 census.[19]
This reference "own income" is probably indicating that he receives income for the rent of his farm or that he is drawing on savings from a previous sale. Study into the land records/sales in his area is warranted.

Death & Legacy
Samuel's obituary appeared in the Knoxville Express on 13 March 1912:
Samuel H. Baty, one of the old residents of Marion Co., a citizen of Knoxville Township, for over fifty years -1856 until 1898 died at his home in Newton, Iowa, Monday March 4 1912, aged about 84 years. The cause of death was the general complications resulting from old age. Samuel H. Baty was born in Ohio about 1828 and came to Iowa in 1856 and settled in this county. His first wife, to whom he was united in marriage survived several years and became the mother of five children, four of whom are still living. Alice wife of Jeptha Clark, near Dunreath; L. D. Baty, south of Knoxville and George T and Newton.[1]
Today, Samuel likely has more than 8,000 descendants.[26]
Year of birth
Various dates exist in the records for Samuel's year of birth:
1928 is listed as his year of birth on his obituary from 1912[1]
1830 on several records including the 1856 census,[6] the 1860 census,[8] the 1880 census,[14] and the 1910 census.[19] However, the census records are notoriously inaccurate. Two mentions of the birth year of 1830 should be considered even more reliable: first, his headstone shows the date of 1830,[2] and his draft record shows 1830 also.[24]The Civil War draft record has a higher requirement for accuracy than the census and was recorded by a trained professional whereas the census record was made by a part-time worker.
Almost nothing is known about Samuel's parents. He first appears on the 1856 census on the William and Susannah George farm. Before this date, no document has been found to date that can be positively attributed to him. His origin remains a mystery.

Especially since he was still married to her at the time of his death. Her name was Margaret A Cooley Baty. They had 8 kids together. I guess that since he had lived in Knoxville so long that this first marriage was most newsy. Sort of an incomplete obit though."

Nice job on this profile. The footnotes are amazing :)
