Biography
Count Henry Maurice of Battenberg (Heinrich Moritz von Battenberg) was born on 5 October 1858 in Milan, Lombardy-Venetia. Later, he was given the title "Prince". [1]
Marriage and family
In 1885, he married Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom, daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, in St Mildred's Church (in Beatrice Avenue), Whippingham, East Cowes, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom.[2]
He became Captain-General and Governor of the Isle of Wight in 1889.[1] He served as a lieutenant in the army of Prussia.
Death and burial
He died of malaria on 20 January 1896,[3][4] on the cruiser HMS Blonde stationed off the coast of Sierra Leone. [1]
He was buried in what became known as the Battenberg Chapel in St Mildred's Church. [1]
