Reginald Lawrie Batten was born on 5th June 1904 in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. He was the son of George Batten and Lily Aufderheide. [1]
He married Gertrude Mary Jennnings on 19 December 1931 at the Methodist Church, Mount Barker, South Australia. [2]
On 17th July 1940 Reginald was commissioned as a Captain in the Second Australian Imperial Force, his nation's volunteer overseas expeditionary force for the Second World War. He was appointed commander of D Company, 2/43rd Australian Infantry Battalion. He was later promoted to Major and posted as second-in-command to the 2/48th Battalion. His next-of-kin was listed as Gertrude Batten. [3]Aged 39 years, he died of wounds on 23rd November 1943 and is buried in Lae War Cemetery, Papua New Guinea. Reginald Lawrie Batten's name is located at panel 63 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.
He was Mentioned in Despatches, equivalent to today's Commendation for Gallantry, on two occasions: gazetted 30th June 1942 [4] and gazetted 8th March 1945 in London. [5] Following the war his family was issued his campaign and service medals: 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945.
