John Bathgate
In his early days he was involved in teaching and was a land surveyor. In 1835 he was admitted to the Rolls of Procurators before the Sheriff. In 1855 he obtained the role of branch manager to the Union Bank of Scotland.
In 1863 he emigrated from Edinburgh to New Zealand to manage the new Bank of Otago in Dunedin. In 1870 he entered politics and was elected to the Otago Provincial Council. In 1871 he was elected a member of the House of Representatives for Dunedin under the Vogel Government.
In the 1841 census John (age 31), a writer, was on North Side Of High Street, Peebles, Peeblesshire.[2]

John married Anne Cairns Anderson on 6 April 1842 in Peebles, Peebles-shire.[3]Residence
In the 1851 census John (age 41), Procurator Fiscal, Sheriff Court Peebleshire Procurator in Land Court in Practise, was the head of household in High Street North Side, Peebles, Peeblesshire.[4]
Second Marriage
John married Mary Mclaren on 14 July 1853 in Peebles, Peebles-shire.[5]
Residences
John, living in Dunedin, was registered to vote in 1869-1870 in Goldfields Towns Roll.[6]
John, living at 'The Glen' was registered to vote in 1871-1872 in Caversham.[7]
John, an Agent in Mornington, was registered to vote in 1885-1886' in the Dunedin Central Roll.[8]
Death
John died on 21 September 1886 and was buried in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin, Otago.[9][10]

It is popularly held that he was born in Edinburgh however his baptism record and the 1841 census both say Peebles, a short distance south of Edinburgh. Close but no cigar.
