The Most Reverend John Bathersby AO DD was an Australian bishop of the Roman Catholic Church for almost 34 years and a priest for more than 58 years. He was the sixth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Brisbane, serving from 1991 until his retirement in 2011. He was co-chairman of the Australian Catholic–Uniting Church Dialogue and served as president of the National Council of Churches in Australia. He was conferred with the title Emeritus Archbishop of Brisbane.

John Alexius Bathersby was born on 26th July 1936 at Stanthorpe, Queensland, Australia. He was the son of John Bathersby and Grace Conquest. He received his primary schooling at St Joseph's, Stanthorpe (1941–50) and his secondary schooling as a boarder at Nudgee College in Brisbane (1951–54).[1]
In 1955, he entered the Pius XII Provincial Seminary, Banyo, Queensland where he began training for the priesthood and, on completion of those studies in 1961 was ordained a priest at his home parish of Stanthorpe. He later completed a licentiate in theology at Gregorian University, Rome and and a diploma in spirituality at the Pontifical Theological Faculty, Teresianum, Italy. On 20th March 1986, Bathersby was consecrated Bishop of Cairns. He was installed as the sixth Bishop (and fifth Archbishop) of Brisbane on 30th January 1992.[1]
Bathersby was appointed Officers of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2008 Queen's Birthday Honours for 'service to the Catholic Church in Australia, particularly as Archbishop of Brisbane, and to the community through the promotion of ecumenical dialogue'.[2]
He passed away of a stroke on 9th March 2020 at Brisbane's Wesley Hospital, Auchenflower.[1] His body is entombed in St Stephen's Cathedral Crypt, Elizabeth Street, Brisbane.[3]
