1777 Frederick was born at Belmont Plantation 1777 in Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Fleming Bates and Caroline Woodson.
1797 Frederick Bates studied law in Virginia and settled in Detroit, Michigan Territory 1797 where he was appointed postmaster in 1803. He was appointed a Justice of the Territorial Supreme Court, [1]
1807 President Thomas Jefferson appointed Frederick Bates to be Secretary of the Louisiana Territory, as well as a recorder of land titles. [2] He held this position in St. Louis until 1812. Bates helped determine whether conflicting French, Spanish, and American land claims in the territory would be upheld, as it had been subject to three differing political systems.Frederick Bates on Wikipedia [3] [4]
1819, Bates married Nancy Opie Ball (1802–1877), daughter of a wealthy Virginia colonel. The couple had four children, Emily Caroline (1820–1891), Lucius Lee (1821–1898), Woodville (1823–1840) and Frederick Jr. (1826–1862).[5]
1824 "The Missouri gubernatorial election of 1824 was Missouri's second gubernatorial election. In the election, which was held on August 2, 1824, Frederick Bates defeated Lt. Gov William Henry Ashley. Both candidates were members of the Democratic-Republican Party. The death of Frederick Bates in August 1825, meant that the next election for governor of Missouri would be held little more than a year after this election."[6][7][8]
1825 He died August 4 while in office as Governor of Missouri, after a short illness, possibly pneumonia. [9] He was survived by his widow, Nancy, just 23 years of age, and three children: Caroline (1820–1891), Lucius Lee (1821–1898), Woodville (1823–1840) all under the age of five.
