Biography

Maria was born in 1843. DNA evidence (matches with Alvarado descendants on Ancestry.com) and key details passed down in family lore STRONGLY suggest she was one of several illegitimate daughters sired by Gov. Juan Bautista Alvarado].

The same DNA evidence also strongly suggests her biological mother was Alvarado's longtime mistress - Maria Raymunda Castillo - but it also it could be someone else given Alvarado's womanizing tendencies. Our family lore has passed down the name of Maria Candida as the woman who raised her

A wedding record for her daughter - who was born in the US but grew up in Portugal - suggests Maria grew up in Mazatlan. Official records from the 1860s and 1870s list her birthplace as Mexico.

What we know for sure from the documented historical record is that Maria was married three times between 1861 and 1870. Her first husband, Manuel King, settled in California during the early days of the Gold Rush and became an investor in a lucrative gold mine at Drytown, California. Manuel died in a steamboat explosion on the Sacramento River in September 1864.

Maria married Manuel's younger brother, Joseph King, in May 1865. Two years later, Joseph died (cause unknown at this time) near present-day San Leandro, California. Two months after his death, Maria also buried their 2 1/2 month old daughter, Louisa.

Maria married the King brothers' cousin, Camillo Ignacio Enos/Avelar, between 1868 and 1870. A massive 1868 earthquake in the Bay Area prompted Maria to move to Massachusetts with Camillo, an infant son they had together, and three daughters she had had with Joseph and Manuel. They settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts, which was then the whaling capital of the world.

In 1870, the infant son that Maria had with Camillo died from "brain fever." In 1871, Maria gave birth to Helen Enos/Avelar. In 1872, Maria contracted typhoid fever, and died. She was 28 years old.
