Biography

William Santford Bastain (sometimes also spelled Bastian) was born on February 4, 1923, in Van Etten, New York,^[1] to Santford Bastian/Bastain and Grace Jackson.^[2]

At the 1925 New York census, William was two years old and living in the village of Van Etten in the town of Van Etten with his parents and siblings Clifford, Ruth, Ethel, Velma, and Marjorie as well as his aunt Myrtle Peters.^[3]

At the 1930 census, William was living on Spencer Road in the town of Ithaca with his mother and sisters Ruth, Ethel, and Velma as well as three boarders: Fred Fish, Mark Fish, and Horatio Shattuck.^[4]

At the 1940 census, William was working as a laborer on Sydney Brigg's farm in the town of Candor, New York.^[5]

William enlisted in the Air Force on January 27, 1953. He was discharged on October 1, 1945.^[6]

William married Lavetta Pearl Rhoades around 1945 or 1946. She was killed in a tractor accident on June 1, 1947.^[7]

William married his second wife, Virginia, by 1950. At the 1950 census, William and Virginia were living in Candor.^[8]

William enlisted in the Marines on January 26, 1951, and was discharged on January 25, 1955.^[6]

William later married Clara Elizabeth "Peggy" McAvoy.^[9]

William died on February 14, 2000. His last residence was Fountain, Florida.^[10]

Research Notes

The majority of sources (including the New York Birth Index) record William's surname as Bastain, but a sizeable minority spell it Bastian. Bastian appears to be the spelling that was used by the family historically.
