Biography

Halifax Chronicle Herald April 15, 1963 Page 2 Harold J. Bartlow. 15 Stanford Street, died Sunday after an illness of three weeks. He was 58. Born In Halifax, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary (Shea) Bartlow. He was a graduate of Saint Mary's College and a member of the university's alumni. He was employed with Moir's Limited for 32 years and was treasurer of the company's credit union. He was also a commissioner with the Workman's Compensation Board, treasurer of the Lion's Club, and past-president of the St. Lawrence and Archdiocesan Union. Ran for the Provincial seat of parliament for Halifax North in the 1953 Nova Scotia Provincial election. Defeated by Liberal candidate Harold Connolly.

The Bartlow family was not nearly as devastated as some families during the Halifax Explosion of 1917, but their windows were smashed out of their home on Edward Street. The family moved to a refuge camp at the Halifax Commons, consisting of canvas military tents, because of the threat of fires in the city and more explosions. It was said to be very cold and windy according to Blanche Bartlow.
