John married Sarah Coe (1828 - 1858) on 1 November 1847 in St Mary, Lambeth, London, Middlesex, England.^[2] Their children were:

• George Herbert Bartlett (1857 - 1904).

John, Sarah and their first child (Edward) migrated to South Australia on the Calabar in 1853.^[3] Their second child (George) was born on 3 November 1857 at Bugle Ranges near Macclesfield in the Adelaide Hills. Sarah died at age 30 on 8 April 1858 when George was barely six months old.

John married Eleanor Jane Chilcott (~1838 - 1920) on 8 March 1861 in Macclesfield, South Australia, Australia. Their children were:
