Biography

Pauline was born 18 Dec 1917^[1][2] in Ord, NE.^[3]She was the daughter of Joseph and Pearl (Fuson) Barta.^[1][4]

She attended school in the Ord District, graduating from Ord High School as Salutatorian of the class of 1935. She then went to Stephens College and the University of Nebraska^[5] where, as a senior, she became the "Practice Kindergarten Teacher" for the Teacher's College's Demonstration School. Between 1940 and 1945 she served as the Kindergarten teacher for the school systems of Holdrege, NE., Beatrice, NE., and Yankton, S.D.^[1]

On 11 Jul 1942 Pauline became a war bride when, back in Lincoln,^[2] she married a young man she had met while back in Holdrege, Charles Bates,^[6][5]a young private from Rockton, IL. who, at the time, was stationed at Ft. Sill, OK.^[1][5]

Charles military career would be meteoric, and eventually, he would be a "weather officer" in the US, Europe, and Asia.^[1]

The couple would have three daughters^[5] during their amazing 73 years of marriage. Pauline became a homemaker-supreme, living in the Maryland suburbs near Washington D.C.^[1]The rearing and supporting of her children became the single most important thing in her daily life.^[5]

In 1979, after Charles had retired from his military career, the couple removed to Green Valley, AZ.^[1]where the dry climate and close proximity to a state university and medical school made for an ideal retirement location. On their 50th wedding anniversary, 11 Jul 1992, they were joined by two of their daughters, with their husbands, on a rafting adventure down the Rio Grande.^[5]

Pauline passed away 31 Jan 2016^[1][2] after an amazing 73 years of marriage. She was laid to rest in the Phillips Cemetery,^[1] just down the road a piece from the Bates Centennial Farm, the childhood home of her loving husband. he would join her a short four months later.
