Biography

John was born September 10, 1929 in Jones County, North Carolina, United States.[1] His parents were John M Barrow and Iva (Totten) Barrow.[2]

In 1930, John (age 0) lived with his father John (age 33) and mother Iva (shown as Ina, age 32) in Pollocksville, Jones, North Carolina, United States. A farm hand, Will Cox (age 20), also lived with the family. John's father was a farmer and Will was a farm laborer.[3]

In 1940, the family's last name was incorrectly transcribed as Farrow. John (age 10) lived outside Pollocksville, Jones, North Carolina, United States (west of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad) with his father John (shown as Jack, age 43), mother Iva (age 42), and siblings Martha (age 7) and Lenora (age 2). John's father was a farmer.[4]

John married Mary Elizabeth Gerock January 18, 1951 in Carolina Township, Pitt, North Carolina, United States[2] and they had at least two children.[5]

After earning a business degree at East Carolina University, John was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He served in Korea from 1953 to 1955 and in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. He flew 65 Wild Weasel missions before being forced to eject from his airplane over water. After retiring from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel, John lived in North Carolina, where he had a second career in the real estate field.[5]

John died March 15, 2011[6] at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro, Wayne, North Carolina, United States. He was entombed March 19, 2011 with full military honors[5] in Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley, Wayne, North Carolina, United States.[7]

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), Air Medal, and the Purple Heart for his bravery and service. Ed retired from the Air Force after flying 65 combat missions, 5,700 flying hours and 20 years of service.
