Muriel was born in 1904 in Waihi, New Zealand.[1][2][3][4] She began an apprenticeship at her father's pharmacy as a teenager while studying at Waihi High School, beginning a lifelong fascination with pharmacy. After two years of studies at Waihi School of Mines, she became one of the first New Zealanders to qualify as a Member of the Pharmaceutical Society.[4]
Muriel joined the Catholic religious institute Sisters of Mercy in her early twenties, becoming a nun and adopting the name Sister Mary Gabriel.[4] Her work in pharmacy continued during her religious service; in 1937 she established the pharmacy at Mater Hospital in Auckland, NZ, operated by the Sisters of Mercy. She was a pharmacist there until 1975. That year, she was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her long service to pharmacy.[4] Sister Mary Gabriel passed away in 1988.[3][4]
