An unusually sad accident occurred in the west end of the county early Monday morning. Mr. Frank Barnes and Monroe Taylor got up long before day and went coon hunting. The morning was very dark and in the wild and dense woods of that section of the country it was impossible for one to see a great distance in any direction.

The hunters were crossing the mountain in the near vicinity of a steep precipice over looking the Devil's race track, and coming to the place unexpectedly Mr. Barnes fell over and onto the rocks, seventy-five feet below., crushing out his life instantly.

The men knew the place well, but did not think they were very near it. They were walking close together when suddenly Mr. Barnes exclaimed, "Look out!" and disappeared in the darkness over the brink. Mr. Taylor only saved himself form following his companion by instinctively grasping a bush.

When Mr. Barnes body was found it was a mass of crushed flesh and bones. In his hands were closely clutched in a vise-like grip leaves and twigs of bushes which he had grasped in a vain endeavor to save himself. The scene of this distressing accident occurred near Sulphur Spring, which sends its crystal waters flowing to the Devil's race track, one of the most wildly picturesque places in the mountains, close in as it is on every side by the ragged walls of solid stone the enclosure is fitly named. To stand on the precipice and look below makes one's head swim and the jagged rocks seem to send up a silent warning to the pleasure seeker to not venture too near the brink.

Mr. Barnes was about thirty-five years old and leaves a wife and several children. Mrs. Barnes is a daughter of Rev. Stone, who lives on Calf Creek. She has the sympathy of all in this sad occurrence.

The Mountain Wave, Oct 29, 1897.
