Andrew Barlow was Wounded in Action during United States Civil War.

Andrew was born in 1838 in Cattaraugus, New York. He was the son of Samuel and Thankful (French) Barlow.

He was enumerated with his parents in Genessee, Potter County Pennsylvania in 1850 and 1860.[1][2]

On 4 August 1862 in Wellsville, New York, he enlisted in Company E of the 130th Infantry Regiment, New York State Volunteers, which was converted into the 19th Regiment of Cavalry, and later the 1st New York Dragoons. [3]

On 8 May 1864 at the battle of Todd's Tavern, he was shot in the arm.[4] He mustered out 20 May and returned to Pennsylvania. There, he met and married Lucretia Simmons in about 1866.[5] They were enumerated with their son James in the 1870 census of Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.[6]

In 1880, they were farming in Genesee Township, and were a household of seven, including four children and Andrew's widowed mother.[7]

He was included in the 1890 special census of Union Veterans, while living in Genesee Forks, Pennsylvania.[8]

The 1900 census of Genesee includes their two youngest daughters: Mary and Nellie. By that time, Andrew and Lucretia had been married 34 years, and were still working on their farm.[5]

Andrew and Lucretia were enumerated in the town of Bingham, Pennsylvania in 1910. Their unmarried son Henry was living with them, and working on the farm. Their son Arthur and his young family lived next door and also worked on the family farm.[9]

But Andrew wasn't well. In addition to his old battlefield wound, he had developed what was probably a melanoma on his face that caused him great pain. Early on the morning of 24 May, he went out to the back woodlot and did not return. His sons Henry and Arthur found him later, though it was too late.[10][11] He was laid to rest in the Genesee Cemetery in Potter County.[12]
