Biography

Susannah "Susan" Barley (married name Daws) was born in 1830 in Wisbeach, Cambridgeshire, England, the daughter of Marina and Edward Barley.

She was christened on 16 July 1830 at Wisbeach-St Peter, Wisbeach.^[1]

She married Abraham Daws on 23 November 1853 in Wisbeach.^[2] Their children were:

• Mary Ann Daws (1854–1944)^[3]
• Abraham Daws (1859–1940)^[4]
• Thomas Daws (1863–1928)^[5]

Susan died in 1914 in Williamstown, Victoria, Australia, aged 84 years.^[6][7][8]

   On Sunday last at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. O. Seidel, Twyford-street, Mrs. Susannah Daws, widow of the late Abraham Daws, and mother of Mr. Thos. Daws (butcher), and Mrs. O. Seidel (grocer), of this town, passed peacefully away at the ripe age of S4 years after, a lingering illness of many months. Deceased was born at. Wisbeach, Cambridgeshire, England, and arrived in the State with her husband in the year 1853 by the ship Brevet, (which was wrecked on the return voyage), and landed at Williamstown, which, at that time, was only a canvas town with a few iron shops. They lived here for a few years, and then went to. the Steiglitz gold fields, arriving there on Black Thursday, a day that will always be remembered. They lived there until 1880, and then returned to Williamstown and has lived there ever since. Deceased's husband pre-deceased her by about 27 years.
   She was buried in the Williamstown Cemetery on Monday, the Rev. Mr. Mason officiating. Mr. J. H. Whear conducted the funeral arrangements.
