Obituary

John R. Barks

John R. Barks, one of the best known colored citizens of Bedford, died yesterday at 11:50 a.m. The deceased was a son of Henry Barks and was born in the Cumberland Valley 66 years ago. He removed to Bedford in 1861.

On February 12, 1864, he was enrolled in Company B, 32nd Regiment, United States Colored Troops, Infantry, and was discharged at Hilton Head, South Carolina on August 22, 1865. He was a good soldier.

In 1867 he was married to Miss Nancy Cossler, who died about 8 years ago. He is survived by 5 daughters - Bessie, Susan and Carrie, of Pittsburgh; Emma and Margaret, at home. Four brothers and one sister also survive him, namely, Shannon, William and Harold, of Pittsburgh, and Margaret, of Bedford.

He was a member and trustee of the A.M.E. Zion Church for many years. The funeral services will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. Mr. Barks was a man of more than ordinary intelligence and ability. He was a Republican and frequently served as an election officer in his ward. For many years he was janitor at the court house and for some time was a porter at the Bedford Springs hotel.

Bedford Gazette, March 25, 1904.
