Before serving as Vice President, Barkley had served as Congressman for 14 years, and as Senator from Kentucky for nearly 22 years, as Majority leader for 10 and Minority leader for 2 of those years. When his term as Vice President had ended, he once again was elected to the Senate. His time as Vice President had cost him his seniority in the Senate, and he was assigned a desk in the back of the chamber with the freshmen Senators. Senior West Virginia Senator Harley M. Kilgore, in deference to Barkley, offered to exchange seats, a move that would put him with the senior members of the Senate, but he declined. Commenting on this during a speech at Washington and Lee University, Barkley alluded to Psalm 84:10, saying. "I'm glad to sit on the back row, for I would rather be a servant in the House of the Lord than to sit in the seats of the mighty." He then collapsed onstage and died of a heart attack.
