Biography

Visitation of Gloucestershire shows a John Barker alias Coverall, of Coulshurst, Salop. as son of William Barker, alias Coverall of Coverall Castle and his wife Margaret "daughter & heir to ... Goldstone of Goldstone." and father of John Barker who married Elizabeth Hill. [2]

Visitation of Shropshire has "John Barker al’s Conerall of Wolnerton [Wollerton] in com. Salop” as son of William Barker ali's Conerall and Margarett "da. & heire to Goulston of goulston". Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica, Vol. II, p. 514 [3]

John Barker married Joyce, daughter of Edward Burton of Longnor. [1]

Named in the Will of his half-brother William Whitmore of Apley in 1593. [2]

Research Notes

Dates are very confused. He is very likely the same person as the John Barker who married Elizabeth Hill. She married her second husband before 1561 and her daughter Alice Barker Leigh married in 1536.

Visitation of Shropshire notwithstanding, given that Joyce died in 1565 and her father in 1524, it is likely that this John belongs earlier in the Barker pedigree than as son of William and Margaret.

Barker-11551 and Barker-3321 are not ready to be merged because: according to the profile he married a joyce burton

The parents you have for him were born AFTER him, which is what happens when you merge people born more than 40 years apart.

When I adopted this profile last year I didn't realize how much work it needed. If I recall, sources were rather thin and reconciling the discrepancies difficult. If you can find any reasonably firm dates for either man, they would be most appreciated.

As an aside, 40 years is not out of the running when the dates are complete guesses. I've seen guessed dates that, once firmed up, turned out to be over 100 years off.

Christopher Barker (abt.1529-1599)

Identifying his origins has been a struggle. See also the G2G posts.

Between the two John Barkers, one may be misplaced as opposed to being the same person.

I've taken myself off as PM, as I cannot edit anyone pre-1500.

Feel free to contact me though.

I'm thinking maybe put the research on Christopher on a separate project page and link it to anyone you think might be relevant. That way we can clear this profile to focus on John.
who is Christopher Barker? Is there a reason for references to him on this profile? There's no Christopher in the Visitation pedigrees associated with John.
