Elizabeth—daughter of James Barker and Ann Appleton—was born in 1827 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England.

Elizabeth, age 23, is living with her parents in Sutton, Lancashire, where she and her father are glass smoothers. Along with fourteen other townships including Windle, Parr and Eccleston, Sutton became part of the large ecclesiastical parish of Prescot and its rich seams of coal, which were first discovered in Sutton Heath around 1540, transformed it from an area of moorland and forest into an area of mining. Elizabeth apparently got married some time before 1851 when she is listed as Elizabeth Smith, married, with three possible children, all born in different locations.
