Biography

Ann Barker (1803-1883) was born around October 1803 in Hexham. She was the daughter of Joseph Barker and was christened on the 31st October 1803 in Hexham. [1]

She married Joseph Dobson at St Anne (Soho) in Westminster, London on the 22nd April 1833 [2] and they moved to Liverpool, Lancashire where Joseph was primarily a drysalter.

It was in Liverpool, on Clarence Street, that their firstborn Joseph Thomas was born around March 1834. He seems to have been christened twice, firstly at St Andrew's on the 22nd March 1834 [3] then on the 19th May 1834 at St Peter's. On both records their address was Clarence Street and indicated Joseph was a drysalter. [4] I suspect the baby was sickly as he died not too long afterwards and was buried at Liverpool Necropolis. [5]

Their second child, named Thomas did not fare any better. By the time he was christened in January 1836 they had moved to Wolstenholme Square in Liverpool. [6] He only lived a month and like his brother before him, he was buried in the Necropolis.

A daughter, Ann Josephine, arrived in 1837 and she thrived. She was followed by another 3 daughters in quick succession and the growing family moved to Paradise Street, Liverpool before 1841. [7] Her husband was declared bankrupt in 1841 and he had to sell his business on Henry Street with all the stock. He was shown as a drysalter, confectioner and spice merchant. They family remained in Paradise Street for 15 years or so from where they ran a small confectionary business. [8] Although things improved for them, they did have some more tragedy. They would lose another 2 daughters in infancy in the 1840s.

Some time after 1855 they moved to Berkley Street, Toxteth Park whilst the business on Paradise Street grew into what would subsequently become "Barker & Dobson" and it was obvious the business had expanded. Her husband was now described as a wholesale confectioner. [9]

Joseph died in 1864 but the business continued to thrive under the management of her son-in-law, Isidore Jacobson. [10] [11]

She died on the 9th December 1883 at Berkley Street [12] and, like her husband and the children who pre-deceased her, was buried at Liverpool Necropolis on the 12th December 1883. [13]
