Norman Alan Barker was born on 10th July 1918 in St Kilda, Victoria, Australia. He was the fifth son of Edward Barker and Jessie Brooks. [1]
Upon turning sixteen years of age, in 1934, Norm enlisted in the 38th Infantry Battalion, Commonwealth Militia Force. It was unpaid service until turning eighteen, but he enjoyed the lifestyle. [2]
In 1937 he played Australian Rules for the Carlton Victorian Football Legue club. In 1938 he transferred to the Melbourne club. [2]
On 4th November 1939, Norm transferred to the newly-formed Second Australian Imperial Force (AIF) for service overseas during the Second World War. [3] He was allocated to the 2/2nd Field Artillery Regiment. [4] He was discharged from the AIF on 5th February 1943 so that he could ...
... enlist in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) on 31st March 1943. He was assigned to the Allied Intelligence Bureau and involved in naval beach landing groups. His final posting was to NRD (W) before being discharged on 4th January 1946. [5]
Near the Allied Intelligence Bureau headquarters at Tabragalba, near Beadesert, Queensland lived a share farmer who had a daughter, Dulcie Ferguson. Norm married Dulcie after the war and they made their home in Beaudesert. [2]
