Biography

Herman BARK was born about 1841,[1] in Sweden,[2] the son of Herman BARK.[3]

Herman arrived in Port Adelaide on board either the ship Hoskin in 1864[4] or the ship Oscar I in 1865[2].[5]

Herman married Emily HAMMOND on 6 March 1866 in Adelaide SA (at St John Church).[3] The couple had seven children.[6]

The couple likely lived in the Brown Hill Creek / Crafers area of the Adelaide Hills from the date of marriage, except in 1873 when they may have lived in the Virginia area.[7]

In September 1869, he was sworn in as a constable for the Crafers District Council.[8]

He last resided in Brown Hill Creek SA.[9][4]

Herman passed away, aged 58 years, of cancer, on 3 November 1900, in Adelaide Hospital, North Terrace, Adelaide SA.[9][4][10].

His funeral was held, and he was interred (buried), on 5 November 1900 in Mitcham Cemetery, Mitcham SA.[10][11][12]

Research Notes

  • Original Swedish birthname is unclear.
  • Birth year: 1840 based on 60 years[4] at death, or 1842 based on 58 years[9][11] at death.
  • Sometimes named as "Hermann" or "Henry", but mostly "Herman".
  • On 6 December 1865, a cargo ship Oscar I did arrive in Port Adelaide, having departed Soderham (Söderhamn), Sweden, on 15 July 1865.[13]
    • Hoskin could be a misinterpretation by the family of Oscar.
    • Herman may have been employed on this ship and deserted.
