Biography

Notables Project
Betsy (Bard) MacDonald is Notable.
Anne Elizabeth Bard, was born on March 28, 1907 in Boulder, Colorado. She was called Betsy in her early years, and came to be known as Betty MacDonald after her book The Egg and I became popular worldwide. Her parents were Darsie Bard and Elsie Sanderson. [1]
Betsy married Robert Heskett in July 1927[2] and moved, with their two young daughters, Anne and Joan, to a small primative chicken ranch in the Chimacum Valley, Jefferson County, Washington, where the stories of her daily adventures, gave birth to the book "The Egg and I". Life on the chicken ranch and her marriage to Robert, came to an end after three to four years, when she returned to her family in Seattle. Betsy continued to collect stories of her daily struggles, even while confined to a TB Sanatorium, which she tells about in The Plague and I. Betty then wrote "Anybody Can Do Anything" about her life in Seattle, with her mother and sisters.[3]
Betty and Donald MacDonald were married in 1942, and moved to Vashon Island Washington,[4] where their neighbors and daily life, inspired Onions in the Stew. She wrote numerous childrens stories and other books, before her death on February 07, 1958 in Seattle, Washington. [5]
