Philip Barbour[1][2]was born in Orange County Virginia on May 25, 1783 the child of Thomas Barbour and Mary Thomas; the year the American Revolution came to an end[3]. He married Frances Todd Johnson on October 4, 1804[4], in Orange, Virginia. He died on February 25, 1841, in Washington, District of Columbia[5].
Phillip studied law at an early age of 17. When he was 19 he entered the College of William and Mary[6]. During his career, he was elected to the Virginia General Assembly (1812-1814), represented Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives (1814-1825, 1827-1830), and served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives (1821-1823). He later served as a Judge of the United States Circuit Court for the Eastern District of Virginia (1830-1836) and Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1836-1841)[7].
Legacy
Barbour County, West Virginia is named for Philip Barbour. Alabama's Barbour County was named for his brother James.
