Biography

This profile is part of the Barbot Name Study.

Jacques was born 22 Aug 1656 and baptised 27 August in St-Martin-de-Ré. His parents were Jacques Barbot and Louise Boulloumer; and godparents were Jacques Boulloumer and Marie Valleau. [1]

Jacq Barbot, "le jeune" merchant son of Jacques Barbot merchant and Louise Bouloumer living in St-Martin-de-Ré married Anne Compagnon, daughter of Mathieu Compagnon merchant and Catherine Boyer also of this town at St-Martin-de-Ré on 24 May 1682. One of the witnesses was Jacques Boulloumer the groom's maternal uncle. There is more information in the entry. [2]

A son Jacques was baptised 10 Oct 1683 at St Martin-de-Re, France. Godfather Matthieu Compagnon, godmother Louise Boulloumer wife of Jacques Barbot "l'aisne"[3]

Jacques' father, also Jacques, was buried 1 Jan 1684 at St Martin-de-Re, France at the age of 52 less 3 days. Jean Barbot and Jacques Barbot (sons) (merchants) signatures are listed. [4]

6 Aug 1684 "Le dit jour et ...... action a .... le mariage du Jacques Barbot le jeune, marchand fils de deffunct le Sr Jacques Barbot vieux marchand et de Louyse Boulloumer ses pere et mere demeurant" translates to Jacques Barbot the younger, merchant, son of the deceased Jacques Barbot merchant and Louise Boulloumer. He married Marie Bertrand daughter of Francois Bertrand and Marie Gallais. The witnesses for the groom were his brothers Jacques and Abraham Barbot (YES, TWO BROTHERS NAMED JACQUES). "espoux declaré ... aage de vingt et trois ans et neuf mois" translates as the groom was 23 years and 9 months. [5]

Sorting out the Jacques in England 1686 to 1689 will be sorted out in due course.

A son Jean Charles was baptised 15 Jun 1690 at Glasshouse St & Leicester Fields, Westminster, Middlesex, England. Father Jaques marchant de L'Isle de Re & Anne Compagnon. P. Jean Barbot M. Charlotte Suzanne Drelincourt. [6]

A daughter Louise Catherine was baptised 13 May 1694, born 30 Apr 1694, at Glasshouse St & Leicester Fields, Westminster, Middlesex, England. P. Abraham Barbot.[7]

Another son John Abraham was baptised 22 Aug 1695, born 16 Aug 1695, at Glasshouse St & Leicester Fields, Westminster, Middlesex, England. [8] The same child is recorded as being baptised on the same day at Stepney - parents Jacque Barbet and Adrie Conpagnon. [9]

It must have been this Jacques who witnessed his younger brother Jacques' will on 20 March 1702/3. The will writer was James the younger, of Westminster, merchant, bound for Goa/sea. Brother John and wife Mary named as executors. Witnessed by James Barbot senior. The will was translated from French so the actual will may have had 'the older' rather than 'senior'; because their father died in 1684 in France. [10]

James Barbot was buried at St James Piccadilly, Middlesex, England on 4 Feb 1706.[11]Ancestry has the burial in 1705[12] so it must have been 1705/06. The register can be viewed on ancestry.
